After Iris (Sally Field) divorces her wealthy husband, she becomes a housekeeper for Paula (Judy Davis) and Leo (Jerry Wasserman), a rich Maine couple. Paula is demanding and almost impossible to please, but when her marriage falls apart, she does not know how to handle the painful separation. Without anyone to turn to, the two women form an unlikely friendship, help each other cope with the hardships of divorce, and learn how to move forward with their lives.
