After his alcoholism leads to a fatal accident, Native American rodeo clown Cotter (Don Murray) goes back to the town where he grew up. Cotter would like to pass the time simply reconnecting with his buddy, Roy (Rip Torn), but, with a local landowner dead before his time, some townspeople start to think heavy-drinking Cotter is a killer. Unable to find the peace and redemption he was seeking, Cotter steels himself in the face of bigotry and unfounded accusations.
