M. Chenal's camera takes its stand on the outside, the world's side. It would have been far better to have dropped the realistic approach altogether, to have battered the real theme into us with soliloquies, with aerial voices, with dream imagery. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

William D @acsdoug 04/15/2021 Other than the general plot outline the movie doesn't follow Dostoevsky's novel very much, I still enjoyed it a great deal. Von Sternberg's direction is excellent, and Edward Arnold is a terrific actor. It's a shame he didn't get more leading roles. See more Fritz C 05/15/2011 based on Fyodor Dostoevskyâ(TM)s book starring Peter Lorre, Marian Marsh, and Edward Arnold⦠Lorre had some monotonous acts, but that would be one of the best monotonous performances he had.
