Sheri Linden Los Angeles Times Though the comic confection's clunky moments keep it from achieving souffl delicacy, its bright zingers and seamless fantasy sequences amp the playfulness, and the mostly unforced performances complement the production's cartoonish exuberance. Apr 3, 2015 Full Review Andy Webster New York Times This candy-coated confection is so irresistible that you're captivated by its sentiment even as you acknowledge its manipulations. Mar 26, 2015 Full Review Jordan Hoffman New York Daily News If this Semitic "Strictly Ballroom" and its campy, colorful characters (including a hummus baron!) don't win you over, you may want to check your pulse. Rated: 3/5 Mar 25, 2015 Full Review David Lamble Bay Area Reporter ...a blockbuster slice of pop treacle... Jun 18, 2020 Full Review Hannah Brown Jerusalem Post It's a stylized, gossamer-light musical comedy with gorgeous production design, a great pop score and, best of all, a group of actors who get to have fun on screen, singing and dancing together. Mar 22, 2016 Full Review Nora Lee Mandel Film-Forward.com Comic froth makes a few gentle jabs, but feels more like same triumph of be-true-to-thyself mantra of "Glee" with predictable romance and similar family conflict resolutions. Audience Member Never feels like a cohesive movie. The characters are all flat, I didn't feel like the movie lets us get to know any of them, really. The "plot" and contest are handled as an afterthought, with nothing dramatic or interesting coming from it. Also, this group of people are friends? I didn't feel any connection at all between them, their all just so thinly drawn there's no real relationships. For an example of what a good version of Cupcakes could have been, I'll cite The Sapphires as a recent one to aspire to, but Cupcakes comes nowhere close. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member GROWING UP IS HARD TO DO: My take on the movies While We're Young and Cupcakes http://ow.ly/LHK5F Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Cupcakes is a surprisingly delightful and enjoyable movie, and satisfies in a way that movies rarely do anymore. It's a modest and charming film, but the pleasure it rewards the viewer is substantial: an engaging (if farfetched) plot, a cast of talented and beautiful actors playing sympathetic characters, and a director (Eytan Fox) who manages to squeeze every ounce of sunshine and and joy from the film without ever condescending to the characters or the audience. Great work is also done by the cinematographer and editor: the film is so color-saturated and peppy you can't help but leave with a huge rose/yellow/green/purple-tinted smile on your face. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review scott f Frothy sweet musical comedy from Israel has little weight, but so what? Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Full to the brim of cliches but you get swept along its super cute and alot of fun. The tale of an Israeli group and their entrance into Eurosong. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Trite. Hackneyed. Cliched. With nothing new or original supplementing the tropes the movie is built of. But the infectious soundtrack and endearing actors make it a very watchable collection of tropes.
