Critics Consensus

Ben Kingsley adds some rich color to Dalíland's palette, but given the dynamic subject matter, this is a frustratingly bland biopic portrait.

Tara Brady Irish Times Squabbling scenes between Kingsley and Sukowa make the enterprise worthwhile, but there are too many exchanges that attempt to shoehorn in backstory and context and even more fudges, most notably around Dalí’s sexual proclivities. Rated: 3/5 Nov 17, 2023 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) The great missed opportunity of this film, with its glossy, handsome design and cinematography, and its genteel orchestral score, is how polite and unadventurous it is – something that could never be said of Dalí himself. Rated: 3/5 Oct 15, 2023 Full Review Jonathan Romney Financial Times Dalíland has its moments, but too often, it’s as saggy as a Camembert timepiece. Rated: 3/5 Oct 13, 2023 Full Review Andrew Galdi Movie Bitches I would recommend it, but I don’t think it’ll win Oscars… except for maybe Ben Kingsley Apr 24, 2024 Full Review Milana Vujkov Lola On Film Helmed by an otherwise highly inventive director [...] it turned out to be less than the sum of its parts, lacking a developed script and coherent directorial vision, dragging on to its inevitable demise — drowned in a patchwork of trivia. Rated: 1/5 Dec 13, 2023 Full Review Monica Reid Far Out Magazine An impressive cast, good direction, and eye-catching set design don’t quite make up for a superficial script. Fans of Salvador Dalí’s art will find a few surprises in the film but not a great deal of insight. Rated: 2.5/5 Nov 29, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Dr. J This is a surprisingly excellent & serious portrait of Salvador Dali. The trailer made it look like a cartoon version of Dali and his life -- silly but distinctive mustache, and all orgies, and ego. Instead it is sensitive to the eccentricities of the man, and pays tribute to his artistic vision as he explains through dialogue delivered subtly and convincingly by Ben Kingsly. He disappears behind the mustache to become Dali as does Gaila in her wig. Wonderful portrait, and correctly set in the 60's milieu. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/19/23 Full Review Pliny Loved this movie. Great producer team with Sam pressman and terrific cast. Very engaging story and production value. Must see Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/15/23 Full Review Hadi K "Daliland," directed by Mary Harron and featuring Ben Kingsley as Salvador Dalí, explores the surreal artist's later years through the eyes of a young gallery assistant. Set against the backdrop of 1974 New York, the film delves into Dalí's complex relationship with his wife Gala (Barbara Sukowa) while navigating the art world's chaos. The acting is a highlight, particularly Kingsley's portrayal, which captures Dalí's eccentricity and vulnerability. However, the screenplay suffers from a lack of focus, often sidelining Dalí's story for the assistant's perspective, which detracts from the film's potential impact. Cinematography effectively showcases Dalí's vibrant world, but the editing feels uneven, leading to pacing issues. While "Daliland" touches on themes of aging and artistic relevance, it struggles to convey these messages with depth. Compared to Harron's previous works, this film feels more conventional and less daring. Overall, "Daliland" offers an engaging glimpse into Dalí's life but ultimately falls short of its ambitions, earning a solid 3 out of 5 stars. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/26/24 Full Review Audience Member Ben Kingsley is probably the best fit cast for the part. A cinematic look at Dali's beginning, and his prime, to his final days. It's entertaining and informative and definitely worth watching. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/25/24 Full Review Steve A I really enjoyed this movie....Beautiful Story and Great Acting...Touched my Soul. * I have noticed many great movies who are reviewed by the "so-called pros" get low ratings, it's a shame and quite sad. I, like so many, pay them no mind any longer and make up my own mind.
