One of the best performances in movie history might be Matthew McConaughey's as mid-1980s, electrician Ron Woodroof. The Texan contacted AIDS when it was considered an immediate death sentence. He, though, fought to live. And, he helped others. Powerful job by McConaughey.

No doubt, the acting is outstanding. McConaughey and Leto are almost frighteningly good. Unfortunately, the plot does not flow as smoothly as I hoped, the climaxes are few and there is a certain feeling of repetition. That doesn't take anything away from the importance of the story that is told here. I just hoped to be a little more engaged in and touched by the events.

Oscar-winning actor McConaughy is indeed terrific as Ron, but the real eye-opening performance comes from Jared Leto who also won an Academy Award for his role as a drug-addicted gay transvestite named Rayon. Playing any one of those three sides would be enough of a challenge for most actors to pull off believably, but he manages to roll them all together and thereby transcends the stunt to create a thoroughly memorable human being. Film also wins the distinction for incorporating the funniest moment in a masturbation scene.
