Audience Member This is the movie that started my "love affair" with Rolf de Heer's work. I haven't tolerated his earlier work, but this one I loved. It's pushy and hard and just about perfect for that reason... Julia is played by Heather Rose, who like her character, has cerebral palsy, where her body doesn't work all that well but her mind works just fine. She lives independantly but needs a carer to do so. She is sent Madelene, a self centred adult-child who is too caught up in her own world to actually care for Julia who she often neglects or abandons her. Eddie then enters the picture the picture and both women vie for his attention. Rena Owen, plays a small part in this movie. Funnily enough, the few moments of comic relief, those release valves which allow you to smile for a moment but actually feel sad because the rest is so bleak. This movie comes just four years after Once Were Warriors (and no films in between) and both have that gritty difficult texture to them. The only difference is that this film has those few moments, that like Once Were Warriors, it pushes you to those difficult no holds barred difficult places but allows a minute to just breathe and feel.
