Stanley Kauffmann The New Republic They have made the film function successfully almost as well as in the original setting. Jun 17, 2013 Full Review Kate Taylor Globe and Mail Much of the cynicism, and thus the fun, of its many Western predecessors goes missing. Rated: 2/4 Nov 9, 2012 Full Review Manohla Dargis New York Times Schadenfreude carries a delectable tang no matter the language, and as the history of Hollywood shows, stories about pretty people behaving badly remain reliably alluring. Rated: 3.5/5 Nov 8, 2012 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com For those familiar with the material, besides the language and location, there's absolutely nothing new brought to material that's been done better, several times before. Aug 6, 2019 Full Review Richard Yu Cinema Escapist The film lives up to its expectations by presenting a beautifully tragic story of how one woman's scheming ends up costing the people who surround her dearly. Jul 1, 2019 Full Review Anton Bitel Grolsch Film Works Despite its period setting, Dangerous Liaisons is equally a cautionary tale for - and of - present-day China. Audience Member It's actually more than OK. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Is this the best version of this story ever told? Tough call, but possibly yes. It wouldn't exist without its forebears, there's a couple of moments shamelessly pulled from the Stephen Frears version, the treatment of the Cecile character owes more than a little to Cruel Intentions, and the references to the politics of the new setting feel somewhat tacked on. Nonetheless, it's one of the most sumptuous films ever made in terms of design, and if it leads you in with your eyes, the script does the whole thing justice. Cecelia Cheung absolutely marvels in taking on a role that's been done by Jeanne Moreau, Annette Bening and Glenn Close and making it her own tour de force so that you don't know whether to cheer or run screaming. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Let's all indulge ourselves and live without consequence. yay!... not. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member well crafted chinese version of the french novel and pic Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Camera is amazing, the story is a bit weak. Nothing too impressive Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member 2.5/5 --- Decent could've been much better...was expecting more so I ended up being more disappointed! Plot that's been done a thousand times over in a million over movies/plays, story was slow and predictable, cinematography was ok, sometimes weird angles of blurry close ups and then panning...Acting was good, Zhang Ziyi performs well though it's strange and almost unfitting of her to play such a weak role/character. Other characters were stereotypical, setting was also odd 1931 China looks extremely glamourous. It's so nice to not have to read subtitles (I miss Chinese films)...Wonder who does them and how some end up translated so wrong? At least there were no misspellings :D Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
