Alan Jones Radio Times Spun around an intriguing premise, Strathie's film cleverly draws on genre staples such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind as he deflects attention away from the core twist and the ultimate reveal. Rated: 3/5 Feb 11, 2021 Full Review Amos Efrat Film Threat While I may feel the film is ultimately weighed down by this objective, to its credit, the twist finale totally sticks the landing and reveals that for all its desire to recreate, its strongest quality was its own finely crafted plotting. Rated: 6/10 Jan 8, 2020 Full Review Rich Cline Shadows on the Wall The film often feels gimmicky, especially when it's trying to push the emotions, but it's still involving. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 21, 2019 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film [Carl] Strathie succeeds in demonstrating his skill, but the result is rather overcooked. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 27, 2019 Full Review Kat Hughes THN A haunting and cerebral spin on the alien abduction story, Dark Encounter gets under you skin to truly terrify you before offering some important things to think about. Rated: 4/5 Aug 27, 2019 Full Review Shaun Munro Flickering Myth Though competently acted, Dark Encounter is utterly airless as a piece of extraterrestrial thriller fiction. Jeffrey P Effectively creepy abduction horror, but spends a bit too much time going in circles with an invisible threat as it becomes convoluted. Some okay mystery and suspense keep it afloat in the second half despite it becoming melodramatic but the big reveal and conclusion muddy everything that preceded it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/25/24 Full Review Dane B. M The pacing is so slowwww to induce a good nap. The acting is, well, put it this way, who is holding the strings? I wasn't terrified in the least. Their actions take forever. The critiques make me think it was the friends of the cast who wrote the reviews. Boring beyond belief. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/21/24 Full Review Brad S I really liked it. The twist was great. A well thought out movie that spent its budget wisely. Sure, it could have done with a few less characters, but it didn't hurt the story. One of those rare unknown movies that you're glad you stumbled upon, and those are hard to find. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/01/24 Full Review Kalin D This movie has no story. It's all just special effects. It being set in the "80s" has no relevance to anything. Also, don't get why we needed so many superfluous characters. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/10/24 Full Review Will S It's movies like this that enlightens us of the seriousness of our reality and the evils lurking within. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/24/24 Full Review Lana L Acting was credible and professional. All the actors are from England and Scotland! It was fun just watching the movie to listen to them do an American accent, circa 1970s, Pennsylvania--I think it takes place in Pennsylvania if I remember correctly. One can usually depend on the actors from the British Isles to do a first-rate acting job. Writing was good. But it all takes places within a narrow location, so the viewer knows it's a low-budget film. Too bad. This one could have been expanded, with these actors, to be a really fine film.
