Alex A Shock value is a strategy as old as Hollywood itself. Many directors throughout the years have used creative, surprising plot twists to catch everyone’s attention. Even though director Adam Coleman Howard's second movie employs a plot twist that evokes typical 1990s controversy, there is a high chance you have never heard of this movie before. Starring Alan Rickman, Norman Reedus, and Polly Walker, Dark Harbor is an oddball of a movie. It is slow-paced, and for the bombshell at the end to work, the three characters must submit themselves to wacky decision-making, which may cause some viewers to simply quit watching. The plot is simple at first: a dysfunctional couple decides to spend some time together on their private island, but on their way to the ferry, they find a young, unconscious Norman Reedus at the side of the road. The young man ends up spending time with them at their house, with their interactions leading to what seems to be a love triangle. The story does a good job of hiding the unexpected outcome; thus, it is highly advisable to rewatch the movie, paying close attention to each character’s mannerisms and catching every missed clue that corroborates the ending. Even with all its flaws, I do think Dark Harbor is a hidden gem waiting to be rediscovered. It has dreamlike photography that ties well with the director’s decision to keep only the three main characters on the screen, rendering a fairytale atmosphere to this flick. A dark fairytale, to be precise. For more reviews: https://medium.com/@alex_j_a Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/04/24 Full Review Stephanie C This is by far the WORST movie I have ever watched. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member I'll be honest, Norman Reedus was what motivated me to watch this film (and um, I was not disappointed :) I was ready to sit through a movie with a horrible plot and cheesy acting, but it turned out to be much better than I thought. Alan Rickman saves the day! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member The last 3 minutes were the real surprise of the movie. It was still a very good movie!
