Van Damme has never been a particularly good actor but this is abysmal. Mainly due to the predictable, weak script and poor acting of the thugs throughout. He used to be good for action scenes but even that's not that good. Though, in fairness, he's playing an alcoholic ex-cop.

This barely holds together. There are a few good fight scenes but competing gang violence with ex cop stuck in the middle trying to keep a promise to a dead ex love just gets muddled. It giving poorly produced 70s tv show episode vibes except it’s a movie. And the lame philosophic dialogue that JCVD keeps spouting is a bit sad. We were hoping for a B movie but got a C movie.

This is some of the best acting I've seen from JCVD in years. An awesome transition from clean slick kicks to hardcore dirty bone crunching moves. The style is different than anything we've seen from JCVD thanks to the directors new take on action noir. Blending the styles of Neo-noir and action, Darkness of Man delivers a unique film that id love to see more of. Would be great to see other action legends take on similar style films.
