Don Q @RT76137928 Jul 7 I can’t understand why this film has only one other (audience) review on this gold standard of film criticism! While my decision to post a 5-star rating was motivated in part by it having been effectively panned by this site, any film made in arguably Hollywood’s finest year, directed by Michael Curtiz & boasting a stellar cast (that includes Claude Rains, John Garfield, the legendary May Robson, brilliant character actor Frank McHugh, Fay Bainter (who’d just won an Academy Award for ‘Jezebel’ (1938)) & Donald Crisp) certainly deserves a critic review rather than depriving prospective viewers who exclusively trust Rotten Tomatoes from ever seeing it. The acting is unsurprisingly top shelf, the Max Steiner film score is beautifully composed, James Wong Howe’s cinematography is as lush as ever & the Julius & Philip Epstein dialog crackles. It may not be Casablanca, but of the escapist Warner Bros. films of the era, it’s one of the better ones!
