Audience Member Well, I had seen this along with a couple of the Cremaster films and it was quite a bore. A short film from director Matthew Barney, I'm not quite sure what was going on, but from what I gathered, a music parade was taking place in Brazil while a black guy masturbated underneath a big truck that hauled the music band. Or something like that. I'm sure there was probably some deep meaning behind it, but seriously, I didn't wanna spend 40 minutes watching a duck-faced person (literally) jerking off to a cotton made vibrator. And don't get me started on the crazy lady climbing on the tree pulling sticks from candles on the branches. It just wasn't for me. I would like to propose it be re-titled to "Semen: The Musical!". Don't believe me? Here's what happens: a tree-shaped float moves through south american streets in a parade of some sort. On top of it, a woman climbs around on the branches and extracts long white poles (ahem) from inside white phallic posts that sit on top of every branch. Below her thousands of dancing and chanting people wearing white tassels from their hair and bodies (ahem) swarm all over the street. Underneath the truck (strap yourselves in!) a naked man covered in lichen, with a turnip up his bottom (!!!) and a flower blooming out of his mouth, rubs his erect penis against the rotating drive-shaft and comes all over himself. Then all of a sudden he has this little monkey baby, who craps all over him and then disappears. He rubs the poo on the (already semen-coated) driveshaft, then he starts masturbating again. The end. god, he is such a wierdo. That said, the images I liked best in the short were the ones obviously taken in the studio. Also, I felt that shooting the film live might have taken away from what narrative it had. I would have liked to see the woman build the whole structure not just two pieces and then everything is up. It can also be said this is a difficult type of film to critique and maybe all these things are part of the intent.
