      What to know

      Critics Consensus

Tony Scott tries to combine action, science fiction, romance, and explosions into one movie, but the time travel conceit might be too preposterous and the action falls apart under scrutiny. Read critic reviews

Obviously the premise is extraordinarily silly, but it's just coherent and entertaining enough to be an enjoyable trifle. Washington's performance is a little too good for the movie.

From director Tony Scott comes the exciting sci-fi thriller Déjà Vu. The story follows an ATF agent who's recruited to join a special task force that investigates a terrorist bombing using an experimental technology that can view 4 days into the past. Denzel Washington and Jim Caviezel lead the cast and deliver some very good performances. And Tony Scott's directing brings a lot of energy and excitement to the film. The writing is also quite impressive, particularly in how it explores time travel and issues of causality. Plus, the investigation itself is engaging and takes a number of interesting turns. The plot can be a little confusing at times, but overall Déjà Vu is an incredibly entertaining and action-packed film.

Deja Vu is an uneven film and it struggles to separate itself from the many ideas thrown into the mix. Tony Scott made great looking films and when he was able to connect with the material he made strong films. The issue with Deja Vu is the lack of clever and inventive ideas. The film feels content and it's just another thriller disguised as something else. Washington would've been drawn to the material by the money and Scott's connection, as the two had worked together over the years. Washington brings strength to a thankless role and he stands above everyone here. The support cast is vast and it was interesting to see Val Kilmer finding his way back to Tony Scott. The premise grows tired the longer it plays out and that conclusion falls in the cliche safety model. I wasn't expecting a lot from a big budget sci fi film but I thought Scott might've salvaged something. Some audiences might find something of interest here but I've been spoiled by cult gems like Primer. 14/12/2020
