Critics Consensus

Though Union and LL Cool J are appealing romantic leads, Deliver Us From Eva is too predictable and contrived.

J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Andie is a male screenwriter’s idea of a perfect woman... Rated: 1/4 Jun 23, 2022 Full Review Nell Minow Common Sense Media Above average movie for high schoolers. Rated: 4/5 Dec 22, 2010 Full Review Joe Leydon Variety [Smith] and Union bring out the best in each other, especially (and surprisingly) during the more dramatic emotional interludes. Jul 6, 2008 Full Review Michael Dequina TheMovieReport.com Smith and Union overcome the sometimes-strained mechanics of the plot. Rated: 3/4 Jan 5, 2010 Full Review Jason Anderson eye WEEKLY While the premise of the director's follow-up ... is promising, he botches the execution at every turn, leaving his cast to drift aimlessly among half-baked plot points. Rated: 1.5/5 Mar 25, 2003 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews The simplistic approach to the material will no doubt please undiscriminating viewers, while those who've seen any romantic comedy will be consistently several steps ahead of the characters. jordan m They did a good job adapting Taming of the Shrew, but they ran into an issue where that source material not only kinda sucks but has also been done to death, in some cases much better than they did here. They tiptoed the line between Gabrielle being appealing and being so rude/abrasive as to be unlikable, in part by making her react to unrealistically committed-to pranks, like pretending to choke on food to the point where she yells to other diners to call for an ambulance. Some of the jokes were pretty good though, and the best parts were when they diverged from the source material as it was at least fresh & creative. Every time I've gone into an early 2000s movie where Black people were the target audience I've gotten my hopes up for a really killer soundtrack & ended up with subdued gospel-esque songs that don't catch the ear. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review adam b Okay, I'll admit. I did enjoy this more than I care to admit. But what can I say, it really is an engaging film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Pure Trash. stupid plot and horrible acting. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/01/20 Full Review Audience Member This movie made such an impact on my young view of love and watching it again, the passion still holds up. The entire story is well written and the actors are top notch. It's part fairytale and part "wow this man really just do that?" I love it. Deliver Us From Eva deserves all its gems. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Total ROT-In real life no man even TALKS to a woman this nasty, except at the DMV. (Poor Dwayne Wade) Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member Gabrielle Union is appealing in this slight variation on The Taming of the Shrew.
