walter m Working in a household lacking a valet, Madeleine(Arletty), the maid, and Adele(Pauline Carton), the cook, are not looking forward to Odette(Jacqueline Delubac), their employer and an actress, traveling to Deauville with Montignac(Jacques Baumer), her boyfriend and a government minister, since they will have to pick up the slack. Fear not, as Desire(Sacha Guitry, who also wrote and directed), is hired in the eleventh hour before Odette can verify his references. First, the title, "Desire," actually should have accents over the e's to reflect the name, not the emotion. But here in this farce, I think it is meant to indicate both, as the movie takes a rather forward looking view towards sex. However, Guitry transcends the theatrical nature of the material(he adapts his own play) in entertaining fashion that, for example, improbably manages to find the tastefully comic potential in a near deaf dinner guest(Genevieve Vix). Elsewhere, he defly employs a couple of directorial flourishes to firmly illustrate the eternal relationship between employer and servant, saying more in one devastating speech than any number of television programs on PBS.
