The film retains much of the original humour, some of it well executed. It's reasonably faithful to the spirit of the books, probably because Kinney is the executive producer, but it's by no means equal to his originals.

Sadly, Diary Of A Wimpy Kid isn’t a modest, Alan Bennett-style slice of ho-hum life, centered around a shy teenager’s weekend job at a Wimpy Bar in Lewisham. No, this is a big, brassy, colourful, and American, kids’ flick.

The 2021 film adaptation of Diary of a Wimpy Kid surprisingly captures the goofy charm and awkward heart that made the original books so popular. What initially seems like a simple kids movie evolves into a genuinely fun and relatable look at childhood, embarrassment, and trying too hard to fit in. The movie leans into its corny nature, but that works in its favor because Greg is meant to be awkward, dramatic, and hilariously self centered. The storytelling feels faithful to the source material, bringing the diary style to life in a way that feels playful and consistent. While it will not change cinema or redefine animation, it succeeds at being exactly what it wants to be: a lighthearted, energetic, and entertaining experience for younger audiences and nostalgic fans alike. It is funny, charming, and surprisingly easy to enjoy from start to finish.
