Denise Pieniazek Puesta en Escena (AR) What Mariel kept silent for years, what she repressed unconsciously, will end up coming to the surface, just as she does after a free fall jump. That constant tension in the paradox of a professional swimmer fighting to “stay afloat”... Alain E First of all I like the director. I loved the German Doctor which was understated given its theme, and also liked XXY. I think this movie is a complete misfire. In the first half the heroine other than some proclivity to sexual promiscuity appears overall balanced as she trains for the Olympic team in synchronized diving. Their coach is accused of sexual impropriety with a new swimmer but he is exonerated as his conduct is impeccable and the accusations appear to be generated by a loner mother. The moment this happens the coach starts fraternizing with the 14 year old in front of the team, then sleeps with her and then we are told that in the past he had also sexually abused the protagonist when she had the same age . They get selected for the Olympic Games in Athens and after our heroine sabotages the team at the final she walks alone in her swimsuit from the Olympic Stadium to the seaside. I happen to have a second home in Athens and the distance is about twenty miles that our protagonist completes in about twenty minutes without encountering a single moving vehicle in a city with about five million inhabitants. I agree abusing female athletes, especially underage, is wrong but a movie on the subject still has to make sense. The first half of the film is very good. The actress looks like a competitive diver. The total is unfortunately a fail. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/16/23 Full Review Daniel G Sincere portrayal of sexual abuse on the Mexican national diving squad. What an impactful and smart protest by the main protagonist! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/15/23 Full Review Michael W This sports movie was great. Karla Souza, Hernan Mendoza, Deja Ebergenyi, and the rest of the cast did a great job in this movie. This true story about complex relationships on an Olympic Diving team during a scandal was dramatic, depressing, and sad. It's a really dark story about doing what is right no matter evil it is. If you're a Amazon Prime member, you should watch this movie sometime. It's worth watching. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/16/23 Full Review Shock Therapy R The story is well written but leaves major gaps of opportunity. The patriarchy still wins and all of its inherent corruption. No we cannot change the real life story, but we can pick ones that actively hunt down the abusers in process rather than after the fact. The movie does depict a profoundly sad state of affairs both in sport and in life. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
