Critics Consensus

It'll be too disturbing -- and meandering -- for some, but Dogtooth is as disturbing and startlingly original as modern filmmaking gets.

John Hartl Seattle Times To put it mildly, "Dogtooth" is not for everyone, but it can grow on you even if you think you've rejected its influence. Rated: 3/4 Mar 10, 2011 Full Review Peter Howell Toronto Star This is the second feature for Lanthimos, and it's a leap from his well-received debut Kinetta. He skilfully doles out tantalizing pieces of information, keeping the viewer in a constant state of suspense and wonder. Rated: 4/4 Jan 29, 2011 Full Review Jennie Punter Globe and Mail The true dark-horse nominee among this year's foreign-language Oscar contenders, Dogtooth leaves bite marks that stick around long after you are released from its grip. Rated: 3.5/4 Jan 28, 2011 Full Review William Stottor Loud and Clear Reviews In Yorgos Lanthimos’ sophomore feature, Dogtooth, a mother and father’s warped parenting brings dark and dangerous results. Rated: 5/5 Sep 3, 2024 Full Review Angelos Koutsourakis PopMatters By systematically abusing the language system, Dogtooth confronts the postmodern speculative dichotomy between reality and fiction. Feb 23, 2024 Full Review Ray Pride Newcity The inexplicable is the everyday and the everyday of these characters lack our reason. What Lanthimos does just right is insure that there are many metaphors and there are none: it’s an X-ray... of fears about society and control. Rated: 9/10 Sep 22, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Kyle C It has some interesting things to say about power and control, especially those of parents, as well as the power of language and understanding. But it doesn’t really do anything with these ideas. It's way too slow to stay engaging and it doesn’t even really go anywhere. Oh, and it’s called a comedy in a lot of places, but it’s not really very funny. Unique and creative, for sure, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/28/24 Full Review Lasher B Wrong title , it should have been " dofsh1t " Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/18/24 Full Review julie b Dogtooth is sincerely disturbing, chilling, and hilarious without being hilarious, refusing to blink as it becomes increasingly bizarre. Everything is tightly controlled in service of creating discomfort - from the detached robotic way of talking, to the composition of each frame, to the performances, to the silence, etc. We hear you loud and clear, Yorgos!! A movie that definitely gives you a lot to think about. Quite a dance scene and some surprisingly awards-worthy barks. “Every dog is waiting for us to show them how to behave” Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/23/24 Full Review Kevin P It is sad to watch, and on one point of the movie you ask yourself if it is so easy to control the mind and change the “normal meaning”, but i liked it’s a tought movie but still being good. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/15/24 Full Review Ian S How, why, what...this film just engages on another level. Have watched it on repeat, the mundane but bizarre is enthralling for me. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/26/24 Full Review Read all reviews
