Edward Guthmann San Francisco Chronicle A spirited but fragmented comedy about the gulf between privilege and poverty, dreams and reality. May 31, 2002 Full Review Deborah Hornblow Hartford Courant Even if "Domesticas'' had succeeded as a comedy it only manages its laughs by making a mockery of its subjects. It ridicules them the way their rich employers do. Rated: 1/5 Dec 30, 2017 Full Review Jeffrey M. Anderson Combustible Celluloid Rings with life, color and laughter without either insulting or falsely glorifying the servant's life. Aug 9, 2012 Full Review Athan Bezaitis Filmcritic.com Disappointingly, while Domésticas uses humor to touch on some of these disheartening issues, it fails to make a compelling statement that truly empathizes with the Brazilian housemaid's cause. Audience Member Made a mistake and can't delete the review. It was for a different movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member So the theme of world day in school was Brazil. City of God, being a brilliant movie, didn't get picked. Don't ask me why, I have no idea. Instead we got to see this lame ass chick flick of which the first hour feels like hell. It goes from one character to the other without involving the viewer or making him laugh. Things pick up in the second half, but even that couldn't save the movie. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member "No meio do nosso Brasil tem um outro Brasil. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member I think that you must be Brazilian to understand this movie. Otherwise, it will be very difficult to grasp the meaning of being a made... despite the fact that most of people absolutely don't care about them! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member me surpreendeu, não imaginei que seria tão engraçado! amei!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member This film gives a lighter look at the lives of Brazilian maids, (in this particular film, 5 maids). Each of them has their own hopes and dreams, and this film explores how they attain them. However, after attaining them, it doesn't really make their lives better. This film could possibly be a drama, but it was told in a comedic way. Fernando Meirelles' direction is still, marvelous, and also Nando Olival's. I wonder, if this film omits the comedy style of making a movie, surely this must be a depressing film, lol. One of the characters in the film says this, "No child sets out to become a maid. But once there, are all other doors closed?". A fan of Brazilian movie? Watch it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
