Cibi Chakaravarthi directs this surprisingly wonderful comedy drama starring Sivakarthikeyan, Priyanka Arul Mohan, S.J. Surya, Soori, Sivaangi, and Radha Ravi. Following the antiques of a college going student whose nicknamed Don, he does the as usual gimmicks and annoyances that comes with a college popular kid. But he is constantly in search of finding a meaning in life. He wants to make something of his life, and is constantly in search of that thing. Living in fear of his strict father, he has to put up a front of being a good student. But when things come to heed when he has a rivalry with the school's principal, Don finally understands the career path he finally yearns to go on. How he has to go on that path, whilst dealing with his father and dealing with the principal forms the rest of the plot. To be honest, the first half of the movie is your typical college comedy you would find in tamil cinema. There's nothing really new or different about it. However, its the last hour or so of the film that made me give it a perfect mark. Its an incredible last hour, and probably the first drama this year that legitimately made me cry and choke up seeing what was going on. You see, the thing is in movies like this, we've seen these stories done in other films. But what Don does so well is to make sure both the youth's plight and parent's plight is shown. It offers you perspective, something tamil cinema usually doesn't properly give in films like this. As much as its a struggle to find our calling, its also a struggle for parents to be caring but also strict. And its beautifully shown in this movie. Don wants to become a director, and from the scenes in his perspective, we assume the dad to be this horrible person for discouraging and threatening his happiness. But when we get the father's perspective, we finally understand and see as to why he acted the way that he did. Its a cliche ridden movie, but man that last hour or so hits hard like a brick. And in the best way possible. I was afraid the movie would miss the mark in what story it was trying to tell, but Cibi proves to you that theres a director in there. Granted, I really wish that last hour was the whole movie, and though I did really enjoy that first half comedy, its that last hour of drama that makes this movie amazing. Follow your dreams and always remember, no matter what, things will work if you work hard, and the people that care about you will support you if you show initiative in what you love. A great movie!
