Chad Jones San Francisco Chronicle A mild-mannered Irish-set drama that never quite manages to be scary or exciting. Rated: 2/4 Sep 19, 2018 Full Review Geoff Berkshire Los Angeles Times Horror buffs can do a lot worse and thanks to the rise of video on demand, the title perfectly describes the ideal viewing experience. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 13, 2018 Full Review Sarah Brinks Battleship Pretension Don't Leave Home was never dark or scary enough to draw me in, or even weird enough to peak my interest. It was just confusing, vague, and ultimately disappointing. Dec 10, 2020 Full Review Josh Goller Spectrum Culture Don't Leave Home never finds a way to strike a balance between the real and the surreal. Moniqua J THIS MOVIE IS METAPHORIC. ALOT OF FORSHADOWING SO IF YOU DONT LIKE GOOD BRAIN TEASES YOU MAY NOT LIKE IT. I SEE SOME ARE CURIOUS AS TO WHAT ITS ABOUT BUT LET ME SHARE WITH YOU.THE PRIEST IS A PHYSIC IF YOU WILL WHO HAD A LOVE FOR PAINTING THE LITTLE GIRL WAS HIS FIRST SOUL HE UNTENTIONALLY TRAPPED WITHIN HIS PAINTING.AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MOVIE THEY SAY HE WENT EXHALE BUT HE DIDNT HE WAS KIDKNAPPED FOR HIS GIFT OF TRAPPING SOULS IN HIS PAINTINGS WHICH IN TURN WERE SOLD TO HIGH POWER PEOPLE A GROUP OF MAYBE 10 WHO KNEW OF HIS ABILITY AND LIVELY PAINTINGS.THE WOMAN WHO WAS A SCULPTRIST WAS INDEED TRAPPED IN THE PAINTING THE DAY THEY ALL CAME TO SEE HER.SHE LEARNED BY HER VISIONS EARLY ON WHAT TO DO ONCE SHE WAS TRAPPED WITHIN...ONCE SHE CAME OUT THE LADY NO LONGER WANTED TO TRAP HER BUT TO USE HER AS SHE USED THE PRIEST BECAUSE HE WAS GETTING OLD, BUT HE ENDED UP TRAPPING HIMSELF TO ESCAPE THE OLD WOMAN..THE PRAYING MARY ONLY PLAYED A PART TO INCOPORATE GOD WITHIN THE MOVIE BECAUSE WHEN THE LIGGLE GIRL WAS FIRST PAINTED IT WAS DONE IN FRONT OF THE MARY . THE BUTLER ENDED UP SAVING HER UNEXPECTEDLY BY HER COMING DOWN TO LEAVE WITH THE SCULPTURE OF THE PRAYING MARY JUST AS HE WAS LEAVING.AS SHE IS LEAVING SHE SEES THE LITTLE GIRL AND SAYS I AM GOING TO SAVE YOU AND SHE SAYS ALL OF US? WELL IN THAT TIME THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN TRULY BE SAVED ARE THE RECENT VICTIMS THE OLDER ONES ARE ALREADY PARISHED,,BASICALLY SHE IS THE VESSEL TO RETURN AND THE GIFT. AS WAS THE PRIEST. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Brian M Pretty creepy gothic story that can get a little heavy-handed with uncanny elements, which vary from effective and trippy to outlandish. The mystery is pretty well done for the most part and is complemented by appropriately gothic settings and a really moody score. Towards the end it seems as though the movie doesn’t really know what it’s trying to say or how to say it—you can only ask the audience to infer so much from a series of dissolves. Nonetheless, the final scene is cool and chilling. Not too shabby, overall! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/06/24 Full Review Audience Member Once upon a time it was the grubby fingered vulgarians in Hollywood that reliably vomited up anti-Catholic crap, but it seems the Irish have now taken over. Writer/Director Michael Tully proves himself a poor Colm Tóibín wannabe with this pathetic potshot against the Virgin Mary. Achingly slow, exceedingly dull and filled with obvious ripoffs of much better movies (Hereditary made miniature dioramas terrifying, here they are simply silly) Don't Leave Home should have been called Don't Even Bother. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I don’t even know where to begin with this. This is truly one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. It doesn’t make sense and the acting is AWFUL. This contains about the worst acting I’ve ever seen. It’s not scary at all, and I can’t tell you what even happened. The movie poster is very misleading, and whoever was in charge with the music score needs a lot of work. The music is very amateurish and obnoxious Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/20/20 Full Review Audience Member Brilliant setup and 2/3 of the way through it gets really interesting. Then, it falls flat on its face. Fun enough I guess but hardly recommended. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/12/20 Full Review Audience Member This is really an intriguing little horror gem. It centers on an artist from America who creates a series of sculptures based on famous missing person cases. One of them spotlights a priest whom painted a portrait of a young girl who ended up disappearing both from her home and the picture. The priest contracts her with the promise to buy her piece inspired by him, commission a new work and have all her pieces sold to wealthy investors at a private auction. Upon arriving strange things begin to happen including strange dreams and weird happenings that lead her to believe the offer isn't genuine and something more sinister is afoot. It all leads up to a shocking and unexpected conclusion. It's definitely a religious horror film but plays like a strange Lynchian thriller. It's not perfect the pacing is a struggle at times but it has an engaging, dread induced atmosphere that feels otherworldly at times. 3.5/5 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
