Madam D Some old movies are not worth watching, but this is excellent. Did I hate that the "spinster" older sister was horrible? Yes. But the plot is right out some great novel, with absolutely terrific acting. And really loved that the actress who played the stage & film role, Mary Morris, refused do stay in Hollywood, going back to stage work. "Morris was unimpressed by the Hollywood scene and returned immediately to the stage"! The premise of the unwelcome outsider marrying into the family, the viscous matriarch, and the sympathetic subordinates continues to be a perennial device to this day. This early example is basic, but enriched by several fine performances, very mobile camerawork, and a bit of novelty at the climax.
