John Leonard New York Magazine/Vulture While I can't imagine why we'd want another Dracula, this one's sturdy enough. Jan 13, 2018 Full Review Felix Vasquez Jr. Cinema Crazed It's not awful, but it's still rather anemic. Jul 6, 2013 Full Review Read all reviews

andrew k I wouldn't say this movie is good, but I wouldn't really say that it's bad either. There are some parts that work, and others that fall flat. For example, I couldn't really find a problem with most of the cast. With the notable exception that I never really bought Marc Warren as Dracula. Which could very well be enough to sink the whole thing. The rest of the characters were fairly well cast, but the script wasn't particularly good and certain normally key characters felt underutilized (i.e. Jonathan Harker, Van Helsing, maybe even Mina). There were parts of the original story that were eliminated and others that were injected which I don't think really worked. Overall, if you're a Dracula fan and have some time to kill, go ahead. But if you're looking for a great Dracula film, probably keep looking. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The story of Dracula has been told and retold so many times that I don't fault anyone for taking liberties with the original story... though very few, if any, film or TV adaptations have been very faithful to Bram Stoker's novel. That being said, this Masterpiece Theater production has Lord Arthur Holmwood (Dan Stevens) seeking help from a bizarre religious blood cult to find him a cure for the syphilis he contracted from his father at birth. Their solution is to bring the mysterious Count Dracula to England (Marc Warren) so Arthur may use his blood to exact a cure. Things obviously go awry as Dracula has his own plans for his stay in London that include Holmwood's wife Lucy (Sophia Miles) and her friend Mina (Stephanie Leonidas). Despite the liberties taken with the story like the whole cult/syphilis thing and having no Renfield but, a slightly off kilter Van Helsing, this production is actually effective and entertaining. Director Bill Eagles gets a lot of atmosphere out of his shots and lighting and is capable of building tension and gives the scenes that need impact the strength they recquire to work. The acting is a mixed bag to a degree. Stevens' Holmwood is a little over the top at times as Tom Burke's Dr. Seward is a bit bland. Marc Warren gives a very creepy performance as Dracula channeling both Klaus Kinski and Malcom McDowell from Clockwork Orange and Sophia Miles is hot as always especially when she turns seductive and thirsty vampiress. Overall this is a decent and somewhat original adaptation that could have used more then it's scant 90 minutes as some scenes go too quick and some characters, like Van Helsing, needed to be fleshed out with more screen time. But, for Dracula and vampire aficianados, it sure beats the Twilight saga. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review bill t Very interesting adaptation of Dracula here. Some elements are removed (Renfield is completely gone!) and some completely revised (some of the main characters die unexpectedly) and some interesting plot revelations (A reason for Dracula going to London is fully laid out here), but I appreciated the work. There seems to be some plot holes evident (or footage taken out) but this version of Dracula, starring Britsh actors I know nothing about, held my interest. Check 'er out! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Talk about a departure from the norm. This "Dracula" adaptation differs from all others because Lord Holmwood sends for Dracula so the Count can bite him and stop the nasty social disease that he has inherited from his father. Van Helsing (David Suchet) has been locked up in a room, a prisoner. This BBC production is about as far out as any "Dracula" adaptation has gone. The production values are solid, but traditional "Dracula" fans may find it difficult to enjoy because of the vast liberties taken. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Marc Warren was amazing as Dracula!! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Much more gripping and involving than the Ford Coppolla version. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Read all reviews
