Jay W "Lord Slug" is a very middle of the road DBZ movie. This one doesn't hold the same nostalgia for me that the first three movies do. Those were all aired on Toonami and that is where I watched and recorded them. This one I didn't get around to watching until much later. On the plus side, where most DBZ movies are just rehashes of DBZ storylines, this one is a rehash of an original DB storyline. Lord Slug makes the same wish as King Piccolo did back in the original Dragon Ball. On the positive side, the villain is able to transform and give us a new varied fight set up. The villain has a unique weakness to be exploited. Other than that, all the other positives are mainly just beats that happen in a lot of DBZ movies. Piccolo and Goku teaming up, a spirit bomb, Gohan and other Z fighters helping at first but then being useless towards the end. All stuff that we have seen in the other DBZ movies. On its own, the movie is pretty good. But because it falls in the middle of a film/anime franchise that does so much of the same thing, this one comes across as just that, middling. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Boc T This movie is terrible. After Tree of Might, you'd think the movies are slowly improving. Nope, we're back to meaningless villains wanting eternal life/youth. Through the first 4 Dragon Ball movies, 3 villains have been trash. Lord Slug's weakness isn't good either. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/15/24 Full Review Audience Member A seemingly unbeatable Namekian gets defeated by whistling. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member First DBZ movie to show that people other than Goku can be of some (if not limited) use. Not that there isn't plenty of whopping for Goku to dish out. You'll probably forget most of it a few days after you see it, but it's a decent enough watch. Gets extra points for Gohan's musical number.
