      What to know

      Critics Consensus

Shamelessly derivative and only sporadically funny, Due Date doesn't live up to the possibilities suggested by its talented director and marvelously mismatched stars. Read critic reviews

Zach Galifianakis' giant, slobbering puppy routine just makes you want to smack his nose with a 2x4, but then he throws out this really moving crying scene that seems charged by the depths of his soul. That's basically the dynamic between the humorless, responsible, soon-to-be-dad and the infuriating, good-hearted, actor-wannabe in "Due Date," and it works. RDJ plays a great, blasé straight man, and the budding father/overgrown-son relationship is filled with triumphs and laughs. But alas, Michelle Monaghan is, once again, a mere supportive woman.

"Due Date" doesn't work because of how tiresome and borrowed it feels. First and foremost, Robert Downey, Jr. and Zach Galifianakis aren't giving "real" performances; they're essentially playing the same characters that they play in every other movie they're in. Also, a good majority of it feels ripped off from other movies ("The Big Lebowski," "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," "Meet the Parents," etc.), which it pales in comparison to. Granted, it has some scenes and one-liners that are sure to inspire laughter in those who watch it, but for the most part, it's just the same thing we've seen done before and done better.

A remake of Planes Trains And Automobiles where Robert Downey Jr plays Steve Martin´s role and Zach Galifianakis plays John Candy´s role. Unforunately there stops the similarities because that film was good and funny, Due Date is not.

Sporadically amusing but mostly tired road-trip comedy, with all the familiar beats you'd expect and Zach Galifianakis playing yet another take on his Hangover character. Robert Downey Jr. is decent at least, and Todd Phillips holds off on the usual homophobia and misogyny found in most of his work.
