What to Know

Critics Consensus

With a story as uninspired as its animation, Earwig and the Witch is a surprising -- and near-total -- misfire for Studio Ghibli.

Roxana Hadadi Chesapeake Family Magazine Earwig and the Witch never finds the right tone, never really develops its characters, and never reaches the high standard of a Studio Ghibli production. It's profoundly skippable. Sep 28, 2021 Full Review John Nugent Empire Magazine It's clearly aimed to appeal to kids more than grown-ups, but there is just the right amount of spark to hold everyone's attention. Rated: 3/5 Jun 28, 2021 Full Review David Ehrlich indieWire Earwig almost never leaves Mandrake's house once it moves there, and it doesn't take long for the movie to grow as bored and stir-crazy as its pre-teen namesake. Rated: C- Jun 14, 2021 Full Review Zach Pope Zach Pope Reviews Earwig is a great character but that’s really all it has going for it... don’t even get me started on the the ending too Jul 26, 2023 Full Review Grace Han Asian Movie Pulse Goro Miyazaki misses the point of what makes Ghibli, well, Ghibli. Rated: 1.5/5 May 25, 2022 Full Review Carson Timar Clapper As a Studio Ghibli project, the film feels near-disastrous, standing as not only Gor Miyazaki's personal worst directorial effort but also the studio's worst outing overall. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/21 Full Review Shaun B I enjoyed where the story was headed but it ended so abruptly and suddenly, i almost wonder if i got the view the full movie Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/08/21 Full Review Krista E it's a cute-ish movie, but it's not on par for Studio Ghibli. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/07/21 Full Review Caleb Yes, there are points where the CGI isn't the greatest. However, if you can get past that this was a great movie. I haven't laughed as hard as I did watching it in years! The ending is one to leave you in tears as well! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/21 Full Review Lizzy Not in English!!!!!!! Worst movie Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/07/21 Full Review Derek Was disappointed the movie was not in English like the trailer. My daughter, who can't read, had a hard time understanding what was happening. Otherwise, the movie was great. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/07/21 Full Review Read all reviews
