Critics Consensus

Eddie the Eagle's amiable sweetness can't disguise its story's many inspirational clichés -- but for many viewers, it will be more than enough to make up for them.

Emilie P Aug 4 An inspirational movie whose wisdom applies to any walk of life: sports, the arts, any job or any passion. The script isn't great, and there’s this really weird part where Hugh Jackman’s character awkwardly compares a ski jump to having sex, in a pretty cringey/I'm-embarrassed-for-you sort of scene. There are some heartwarming moments, though, and the ending, is hard to resist -- cheesy but still effective. But, the conflict at the end of the second act feels majorly fabricated and as it turns out... it is! It's very annoying how extremely loosely this movie is based on a true story. So many details are exaggerated or flat-out made up. Like, the real Eddie was far more experienced than the movie portrays, and Jackman’s character is entirely fictional. Which are basically the two bases for the whole story. This is feel-good manipulation at its worst. See more Kevin P Jan 22 A feel-good sports movie that actually earns its happy ending with showcasing just how hard the titular character had to work to achieve his dreams. It made the movie feel more grounded than most other sports underdog movies. Taron Edgerton and Hugh Jackman kill it as the leads and really tie this movie together. Not perfect, but hey, neither was the actual Eddie the Eagle, and that’s half of the charm with its sincerity. See more Read all reviews
