Roger Greenspun New York Times I have now seen enough of Rocha's work to know that I dislike it for its own sake, and not for the unfamiliarity of its locale and people or for the ritual obsessiveness of its themes. Jan 15, 2005 Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Reader One of the later entries (1966) in Brazil's short-lived Cinema Novo movement, applying New Wave pyrotechnics to popular and political mythology. Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Ted Shen Chicago Reader Rocha's frenzied mise-en-scene, which borrows from Fellini, Antonioni, and European avant-garde theater, is so stylized and self-referential that it probably appealed less to the masses than to the left-wing intelligentsia it scrutinizes. Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Serge Daney Cahiers du Cinéma It is right when he abandons any notion of plausibility or concern for accuracy, when he returns to allegory, and then opera, that Glauber Rocha seems the most gifted. Audience Member Amusingly awful pretentiousness - intentional - certainly uncompromising ,relentless. "The hunger of the absolute" "Sunsets do not make me feel the pain of adolescence" Sound design Erratic volume, unmatched dubbed sound, use of inappropriate music as parody, screaming. Scenes: Hard to follow, frustrating somewhat tedious but with some classic moments I didn't like: the ghastly sex-dancing - maybe cultural or of that time? Or was it to challenge audience Greasy Liberal Politician, not a convincing performance The main poet/hero - macho - a bit of a twat. I liked: B&W The lady - looked realistic/everyday Trippy jump cuts Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review s r 1001 movies to see before you die. The premise was good, but the delivery was not something that resonated. I don't need to see it again. It was on YouTube. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Dystopian Brazilian film about two political candidates who are undermined by those around them. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member GENIAL!
