Critics Consensus

A horror/rom-com hybrid that somehow manages to blend its ingredients without losing their flavor, Extra Ordinary more than lives up to its title.

An unfalteringly funny, ectoplasm-drenched horror-comedy that deserves the cult status it's destined for. Go to Full Review

"Extra Ordinary" is an extraordinarily funny tale about ghostbusting, lonely hearts and moving on. It'll possess you. Go to Full Review

Some really good special effects for a small film of this size. Plus, anytime a film can have Will Forte playing a singing bad guy, I really can't say I had a bad time. Go to Full Review

A promising debut feature from the writer-director team of Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman, Extra Ordinary is just clever, funny, and referential enough to earn a modest cult following. Go to Full Review

Is there a good way to say "Extra Ordinary is Extraordinary!" without being a total cheeseball sell-out but still managing to get that onto the movie's poster? Because Extra Ordinary is extraordinary and I want the whole wide world to know it Go to Full Review

judy w 03/19/2020 Weird but a fun movie cheesy parts and lots of sight gags interesting how it played out See more Dean B 03/18/2020 Quirky, fun and endlessly unexpected. Sometimes the Irish dialect was a bit hard to follow, but it didn't affect your ability to follow the story. See more Mary M 03/14/2020 Quirky, Funny and Entertaining! Just an all around feel good movie! See more Tsz Kin H 03/08/2020 So freakin funny and such a beautifully made film. Rare to see those things come together. Has cult classic written all over it. See more Kyle C. @kylekc Dec 9 Extra Ordinary is a charming, deeply silly Irish comedy that knows exactly what it wants to be and commits to the bit. The whole thing kicks off with an old-school VHS instructional video vibe that sets the tone perfectly. The movie’s dry humor is its real engine, and the timing is so tight that even the throwaway gags land. Jokes like “ex-wife-orcism” and the cigarette magically appearing every time Bonnie takes over Martin’s body are exactly the sort of absurd little touches that give the film its personality. Maeve Higgins is great as Rose, but Barry Ward as Martin more or less steals the show. Watching him bounce between personalities when he’s possessed is genuinely hilarious. He plays the different characters with just the right amount of restraint, which fits the movie’s deadpan style. Even Bonnie, who’s never actually present, somehow has more personality than some living characters in other movies. The script is predictable in a comfortable way. You can see the broad strokes coming, but the fun is in the details and the delivery. It does get a bit too self-aware at times and packs in a few more ideas than it needs to, especially toward the end. The finale is funny, but it undercuts the movie’s own ghost rules enough that things stop adding up if you think too hard. Still, it’s a clever concept executed with real affection. Will Forte is a fun addition, the jokes rarely miss, and the whole thing has a homespun charm that’s hard not to enjoy. Even when it loses the plot a little, it never loses its sense of humor. See more Jack F @MovieFan111 Nov 21 I do agree that it's a weird movie. Dang, a 98%? That's crazy. No one knows about this one though. It's kind of forgettable to be honest. See more Read all reviews
