2/5
The vagueness around the supernatural elements is intriguing but Edwards can’t quite kick the whole thing up a notch to make the material really thematically rich, and relies too much on sonically driven jump scares. Go to Full Review

Father of Flies then is a bleakly grim look at family tragedy and an exploration of the grief it breeds. Go to Full Review

The film takes nearly all the tropes of horror cinema and at times eschews them, gentle caressing them or flipping them on their head. There are not one, but two ridiculously creepy moments this well-versed writer has never seen on screen before. Go to Full Review

Like true night terrors, it never lets the audience get a handle on exactly what the threat is, and therefore, how it can possibly be survived. Go to Full Review

The confusion of incident and memory add to the sense of creepiness and disorientation which Tetlow's performance and the heightened visual style create. Go to Full Review

Seth H Feb 3 This movie creates a reasonably scary atmosphere which is ultimately wasted for lack of a coherent plot. The acting is good and the music pulls its weight. But it's almost impossible to figure out the ending. To wit, a young boy's beloved mother has been exiled from the family home for mostly undisclosed reasons, while a creepy mask-wearing woman has moved in with him, his father and his rebellious older sister. About halfway through, the interloper is revealed to be pregnant, presumably by the father. With the latter temporarily absent and the weather glowering, she grabs a kitchen knife and has at it with the sister while the boy hides in fear. Meanwhile, an evil clown enjoys an extended gig on a menacing TV. A dotty neighbor appears to have the boy's best interests at heart, but it's not clear if she has any say or sway in the matter. Daddy rushes home after the girlfriend phones him in a (pretend?) panic, but whether anybody actually remains alive at that point is speculative. See more Jamie O 05/10/2024 Just horrible.
