Leah Pickett Chicago Reader Mostly, the film inspires in the viewer an urge to read the books instead. May 31, 2019 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) The overall impression is of a clueless film toadying up to an uninterested novelist. Rated: 1/5 May 17, 2019 Full Review Leslie Felperin Guardian Straight-up documentaries about literary subjects are so rarely released theatrically, it's hard not to cheer when one makes it into cinemas. Rated: 3/5 May 17, 2019 Full Review Angelica Frey Hyperallergic Its structure resembles a panel discussion, which, given the topic, is not bothersome at all: the expert pool... is articulate enough to keep the viewer engaged with the topic. Feb 24, 2020 Full Review Pat Mullen POV Magazine This breezy documentary goes heavy on adulation and light on insight. Jun 28, 2019 Full Review Andrew Parker The Gate [It] feels like it's running counter to everything the writer stands for and holds dear. It's a publicity piece and nothing more. Audience Member This is an intriguing documentary on the Italian author Elena Ferrante (a pseudonym) focusing on her books titled the Neapolitan Novels. They have become a global sensation, with over 10 million copies sold in over 50 countries. What makes this all even more intriguing and mysterious is that Ferrante has maintained complete anonymity over many years, and that no one has been able to conclusively prove who she is. I think this doc may appeal more to those who have read her books, but, despite not having read them myself, I still found the film to be quite engrossing. Criticisms of the movie that I've read regarding the continual praise by interviewees of Ferrante is justified. The film could have used a little more balance, in my opinion.
