It's 1908 and a traveling circus is about to make an appearance in a small German town where Albert Oberholzer (Werner Hinz) lives with his wife, Iduna (Lilli Palmer), and daughter, Anna (Romy Schneider). To their surprise, the director of the circus is none other than Albert's brother, Alexander (Karl Schönböck). Being a respectable businessman, Albert prefers to keep the fact a secret. What's worse is that Anna is so enthralled by the circus, she plans to run away and join it.
