Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Damien Chazelle is an enthusiastic, visually expressive filmmaker with practically nothing of interest to say about the human experience. Mar 3, 2020 Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint First Man doesn't just dwell on its subject's achievements. It takes a beat to glance into Armstrong's personal motivations and vulnerabilities while using technical mastery to tell an engrossing true-life story. Jul 29, 2019 Full Review Ryan Gilbey New Statesman In those sequences when Armstrong is heading for the stars, the approach is so immersive on a sensory level -- cacophonous sound design, juddering cinematography verging on the abstract -- that it almost compensates for the void at the film's core. Jan 26, 2019 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film First Man is extravagant filmmaking it every way. The craft is sharp. The story is surprising. The emotion is real. Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Calum Cooper Source (Scotland) Subsequently, we also see how Armstrong looks to the moon for escapism. Behind First Man is a captivating look at grief. Rated: 3/5 Jul 14, 2024 Full Review Ryan McQuade InSession Film The cinematography in the film is fantastic and for his first film not about music, Chazelle gets the best score of any of his films from composer Justin Hurwitz, one that might just be my favorite score of the year so far Rated: A Apr 3, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Kevin P My Grandma was in the same class as Neil Armstrong at Purdue University and she said that he was actually pretty charismatic and every girl had a crush on him. Now I’m sure the death of his daughter and teammates in addition to all the rigorous space training had a large effect on emotions, as many historical accounts talk about his more quiet/subdued side, but I feel like the movie could’ve played more into a transition/contrast of emotion from being more charismatic and open to slowly becoming more broken and emotionally guarded. It was also kind of odd how they sidelined Buzz Aldrin for a good chunk of the movie and gave Jan Armstrong (a woman from Illinois) a somewhat southern accent. But despite those gripes, I still really enjoyed the movie for how riveting the tension was, how fresh the realism was, and just how fantastic the cinematography was at really putting the audience in these astronauts’ shoes (or suit in this case). Neil Armstrong’s performance at times is greatly subtle with his guarded emotions, but often too robotic and emotionless during a good chunk of the movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/13/24 Full Review Stephen O Shows a sad side to Neil Armstrong that has never been depicted in film. He’s the first man - a man isolated, grieving, and trying to keep a strong front; unable to be vulnerable with his wife, kids, friends, or the media. It’s a triumph that he survived, yet a tragedy in that he’ll always be a man alone. The lack of dialogue conveys his lack of interpersonal connection, while the turbulent sound effects and music score communicate his own inner turmoil. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/13/24 Full Review Brad M This is not a sci-fi it's a drama. The story was very good and gosling was exceptional. Def. Worth watching. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review James L This is a wonderful movie, easily 10x better than Apollo 13. It is much more realistc, and it shows why we haven't gone back to the moon and why we should again. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/29/24 Full Review Bo L First Man is a very interesting film that manage to walk the thin line between the factual events that made Neil Armstrong, and the more emotional person who he of course was but is missing from the history books. It is obviously hollywoodised to make a more compelling film and dramatic film. Ryan Gosling does a fine job as Armstrong, portraying him as the somewhat introvert person we know from history, but also as the driven father and engineer, and a professional! The cast is an odd mismatch of actors that are too young or too old, and for a large part looks nothing like the real people (most of the astronauts from the apollo missions were born the same year and looked remarkably alike, a far more homogenous group of men), and only true buff would probably notice. But it is beautifully made and beautifully scored and paced just right. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/18/24 Full Review Claudine J full disclosure one of my go-to popcorn movies is apollo 13, even though I know how it ends. this is NOT that even if your birdie brain tells you 'this is neil armstrong fer crying out loud', the way the film delivers the details going up to the success? woof. one heck of an engineer...check able to go a couple of rounds in the vomit comet...check look straight at death and go about your work...check absolutely unimpressed by anything PR...check inscrutable...yep so if you can take another viewpoint after the glorification of space, one that includes 'groaning metal' and claustrophobia and dread, go for it. Ryan is great, btw. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/01/24 Full Review Read all reviews
