Her life is full of routines, boundaries and self-control -- all of which get put to the test when she meets Will, an impossibly charming teen who has the same illness. What to Know

Critics Consensus

Elevated considerably by Haley Lu Richardson's performance but bogged down by clichés, Five Feet Apart doesn't tug at the heartstrings quite as deftly as it should.

Clarisse Loughrey Independent (UK) There's a sincerity here that undoes many of its excesses, thanks largely to the grounded chemistry of its leads. Rated: 3/5 Dec 10, 2020 Full Review Christy Lemire FilmWeek (LAist) There's a million books like this and a million movies like this, where people are beautiful -- but they're sick! Sep 23, 2019 Full Review Stephen Romei The Australian The plot is believable - right up to the heart-in-the-mouth turns near the end - and the dialogue sounds real. That is a good start in any movie, but in this case it powers on from there because of the A-grade performances of the two young leads. Rated: 4/5 Apr 5, 2019 Full Review Calum Cooper Source (Scotland) There’s some quality production design, and the occasional amiable scene. But as a whole, the movie is dull and saccharine, despite the efforts of its magnetic lead actors. Rated: 2/5 Jul 14, 2024 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies But that ending. It doesn’t quite kill the good that comes before it, but it comes mighty close. Rated: 3/5 Aug 20, 2022 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut Five Feet Apart suffers from the same clichés as most of the decade’s YA romantic dramas while having to stomach the manipulation of trivializing an illness that can be terminal. Audience Member Of course! Here's the improved version of your original message, now including your new point about the lung transplant logic: -- I think Five Feet Apart was a great movie. I felt connected to Haley Lu Richardson’s character, Stella Grant. Yes, I know there were some imperfections. Like at the end — why were they crying so much? Stella could have gotten another lung transplant since her first lung was already infected with the virus. That’s why people get a second transplant. And even if she got a second one from someone else, the lifespan is around 5 years. She was crying because she thought she’d only live 5 more years — but logically, even before those 5 years were over, she could’ve gotten a third transplant, right? That option was never shown. They could’ve at least added that idea to make it more realistic. And by the end, Stella wasn’t even affected by the virus anymore, so there was no real risk of passing it between them. She could have stayed with him. That’s the only part I didn’t like. Also, I hate it when movies copy ideas from other films. Like seriously, make something different! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/20/25 Full Review Hope M Such a good movie!!!!!!! So beautiful and touching, and it gives you a deeper perspective on life, and the people you love. 10/10 movie, definitely a tear jerker. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/19/25 Full Review LUCIANA M It is one of the best love movies I have seen, I love its characters and the plot of the movie, despite the fact that its story is too sad it leaves us with a lesson for some people, we must touch those we love no matter what. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/15/25 Full Review Adrian R I loved this movie. The plot grabs you and makes you feel what it's like to have that sensation of finally being able to love but knowing that at any moment you can lose everything. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/15/25 Full Review Zunny C I think it is a good movie, with good acting. It manages to catch the viewers with its nostalgic story, which touches people’s deepest feelings and makes them cry. Its story is very deep and moving Zunny Cuesta Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/15/25 Full Review Sara R This movie is ideal if you like love movies, as it shows a deep love between the two main characters. It also shows us that there is always a person who will change your whole life, and will make you see it in a different way.
