Jason Bailey Flavorwire We've all been there, which is part of what makes this seemingly insular New York artist story so universal, and so affecting. May 4, 2017 Full Review Sam Weisberg Village Voice Flames, though energetically crafted, erotic, and at times heartfelt, is an exasperatingly esoteric meditation on love. Apr 27, 2017 Full Review Chuck Bowen Slant Magazine Flames grows tougher, weirder, and more ambiguous, casting much of its early cuteness in a starker light. Apr 23, 2017 Full Review Erica Peplin Vague Visages A good piece of performance art invites identification and raises significant questions like ‘Who do we think we are?’ and ‘Why do we do that?’ An insincere piece can, like Flames, frustrate or even discomfort. Dec 5, 2023 Full Review Elissa Suh MUBI With high potential to ruffle with its solipsism, Flames turns out to be cathartic and timely piece of performance art that might be the most representative of our society. Feb 27, 2020 Full Review Bradley Gibson Film Threat Taking a step back: the last half hour saves the film, framing the relationship and the story with narrative distance and objectivity. If you were stuck watching only the first hour it would be infuriatingly pointless. Rated: 6/10 May 10, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Hooked from start to finish. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a messy self-indulgent movie. It confuses "love" with infatuation. The minimal structure imposed by the editing makes it difficult to become involved in the sequence of events. The latter part of the film works to discover why the relationship ended. But It was such a shabby encounter that I didn't care why it ended. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member This was my favorite movie at Tribeca! Made me cry. Highly recommend. Not an easy movie, but very powerful. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Read all reviews
