Stephen Romei The Australian Flatliners, the remake, is a good example of how the gene pool doesn't necessarily become stronger with time. Rated: 2/5 Oct 6, 2017 Full Review Danielle White Austin Chronicle If you find Flatliners to be conceptually interesting (which it is), stay home and rent the original. Rated: 1/5 Oct 5, 2017 Full Review Tasha Robinson The Verge Instead, this is yet another cinematic Frankenstein's monster, stitched together out of scavenged parts, and shocked back to life for no clear or compelling reason. Oct 2, 2017 Full Review Daniel Howat Next Best Picture There's no sense in burying the lede: Flatliners is terrible. Instead of attempting a philosophical exploration of death and life, Flatliners settles for being a poor, generic thriller without any real thrills. Rated: 2/10 May 19, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Schumacher's Flatliners is prime material for a remake, being a slick idea that wasn't handled very well in the first place; but alas, this version is a disposable, nonsensical, and instantly forgettable mess that makes the original seem almost masterful. Blu B It's really bad and really boring at times. The changes this makes is this really is just now 90% horror and 10% Sci-Fi. You'd think streamlining the ideas would make this more focused and at first you think it's only gonna be 3 characters as well. That would be a great idea for more focus overall. But no one told me they'd make this into just pointless jump scares and scare scenes that don't add up to anything. The editing is terrible and the pacing is horrifcally bad. In a good chunk of the second half it just jumps around between the individual subplots and pointless scares that don't add anything and are edited terribly. The cinematography is terrible. It's so lifeless, the dream sequences are for some weird reason CGI'd it looks like or look like a Freddy Kruger dream. The lighting in this is almost as dull as 2015 Fantastic Four. The direction is super uninspired and just as basic as you get. The acting isn't good either. And it's not because people aren't trying here. It's because the dialouge is not good at all. 75% of the lines in this are just poorly explained plot expose or summarizing what we see a character is doing just not very good. The actors here also just aren't as good as the all star cast of the 90' one. Also the biggest things missing here is Schumachers really strong direction which helped carry the 90' one through some of the clunkier moments. It also was more focused it felt on character development rather than jump scares in this one. The general arc is there for them like the first, but it's only the barebone moments with the rest being horror related stuff that just isn't scary at all and has no point to it. The music is also boring, generic and forgettable. The commentary also is completely lost also because of the focus on horror here. Subpar dialouge, huge step down in direction, more refined character growth replaced with pointless and poorly done horror, and the and literally adding nothing or fixing nothing that improves upon the 90' one. Skip this. Completely pointless remake. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/19/25 Full Review Aluna U Though often mistaken as a remake, Flatliners (2017) functions more as a spiritual sequel to the 1990 version, retaining only the core idea of near-death experiments. The film offers a fresh cast and plot but suffers from shallow character development and a rushed narrative. Despite strong performances—especially from Elliot Page—the execution lacks the depth and coherence of its predecessor. Misleading marketing and weak story connections to the original likely fueled unfair comparisons. Taken on its own, it’s watchable, but far from exceptional. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/23/25 Full Review CaptainBoulder T Good concept with terrible execution, the movie makes no sense and it tries too hard to be funny while also trying to be serious Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/21/25 Full Review David W Just watch the far superior original. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/09/25 Full Review Bobby J While there are parts of the movie that ring true, much of it does not. The purpose of movies with "paranormal" or greater existential topics is to entertain effectively by playing on your fears and engineering jump scares. If all the NDE experiencers in this movie started to become Faith-healers and Mediums, it might be comforting, but it probably would be far less entertaining. In trying to blend morality issues into what feels real, it just seems off the mark. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/19/25 Full Review Read all reviews
