Though often mistaken as a remake, Flatliners (2017) functions more as a spiritual sequel to the 1990 version, retaining only the core idea of near-death experiments. The film offers a fresh cast and plot but suffers from shallow character development and a rushed narrative. Despite strong performances—especially from Elliot Page—the execution lacks the depth and coherence of its predecessor. Misleading marketing and weak story connections to the original likely fueled unfair comparisons. Taken on its own, it’s watchable, but far from exceptional. While there are parts of the movie that ring true, much of it does not. The purpose of movies with "paranormal" or greater existential topics is to entertain effectively by playing on your fears and engineering jump scares. If all the NDE experiencers in this movie started to become Faith-healers and Mediums, it might be comforting, but it probably would be far less entertaining. In trying to blend morality issues into what feels real, it just seems off the mark.

Flatliners, putting aside any knowledge of the original 1990's movie, started with an ambiguous philosophy that is rather interesting, but failed to deliver and keep this ambiguity with poor decisions in the narrative or understanding of the concepts it tried to unfold through the movie.
