Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) As made clear by Once, music has an inspirational and transformative strength in the movies of Irish filmmaker John Carney. His latest Dublin-set feature is almost as satisfying as his 2007 hit. Oct 5, 2023 Full Review Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) A very messy movie. I shouldn't like it as much as I do, but I do. Oct 4, 2023 Full Review G. Allen Johnson San Francisco Chronicle Resistance to this emotional, melancholic gem is futile. Not only hitting all the right notes, but effortlessly playing them in the wrong order to create something magical. Theodore C Absolutely loved. John Carney can do no wrong and knocked it out of the park once more Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/25/23 Full Review matthias s John Carney has done it again! Always a fan of his work, and *Flora and Son* hits all the right notes (pun intended). It’s such a heartwarming and charming story about a mother trying to connect with her rebellious teenage son. Watching their bond grow through music was so beautiful, and the songs? Incredible. Every track felt meaningful and added so much to the story. It’s not just about the music, though—it’s about how music brings people together, how it heals, and its importance in our lives. I had a smile plastered on my face the entire time. It’s got the perfect mix of laughs, heartfelt moments, and, of course, amazing tunes. The film was incredibly captivating and honestly a pleasant surprise. If you’re into music dramedies that make your heart sing, this one’s a must-watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/22/24 Full Review Audience Member Set in Dublin's inner city flats - her accent was awful and often times was trying too hard, unconvincingly. Then there's the weird plot: as if an inner city single mom who works as a cleaner, is going to make friends with a bloke online, who happens to lives in LA, and then pays him $20 per music lesson (don't ask about the even weirder concept of time zones - doesn't seem to apply here..?!) - DREADFUL Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/18/24 Full Review Matthew J Brilliant, really enjoyable. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review Jace E I love Sundance Film Festival! As a fan of Sing Street, I was excited when I saw that John Carney's latest film was playing in Park City. The experience of watching the film with the director and cast in the room was phenomenal. Carney is a masterful writer/director, and I am continually drawn to his storytelling. The performances in the film were equally strong with Eve Hewson crushing her role and forming a chemistry-fueled bond with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It's hard to separate the film from the experience. The finale was a little jumbled and lacked closure in certain aspects. During the Q&A, Carney said that this film was a dedication to mothers (similar to how Sing Street was "for brothers everywhere"). Knowing that, my perception of the film's ending changed. The music was not as strong as his previous films, but it was still a solid movie. Best Character: Flora Best Scene: Rooftop Duet Additional Note: I wish that I could download the songs and listen already, but that will have to wait until the film is released. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/17/24 Full Review Ian M Apart from some excellent sequences between Hewson and Kinlan, this film is an absolute cheese fest best suited for the Hallmark Channel. Shocked by the positive reviews. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews
