As made clear by Once, music has an inspirational and transformative strength in the movies of Irish filmmaker John Carney. His latest Dublin-set feature is almost as satisfying as his 2007 hit. Go to Full Review

A very messy movie. I shouldn't like it as much as I do, but I do. Go to Full Review

It is full of hope and heart with a few laughs along the way. The songs composed for the film range from sweet, acoustic melodies reminiscent of Carney’s earlier film, Once, to uptempo numbers infused with hip-hop and are sure to please most crowds. Go to Full Review

When Hewson asks him to take off his shirt, the audience is right there with her. See more Nic S Jul 1 Flora and Son centers around a heartwarming story of how a young mom and teenage son reconnect through creating music together. This film kind of acts as an origin story for their band. The performances, heralded by Ewe Hewson, are so natural that these characters feel like people I can just come across to on the street. It’s relatable, flawed and human. We don’t necessarily like the characters we meet in the beginning, but as they grow incrementally, we end up rooting for them. The film feels like it was made in such a genuine space, truly aiming to showcase this simple story in the best way that it can. I also love how music was such a character in this movie, with each song composing an extra layer of detail and storytelling to how the character is feeling or emphasises the depth in a scene. Flora and Son can also be a lot of people’s first look into Irish film, learning about the jargon and culture in a laid back, ingrained way, was pretty cool. I walked out of the movie feeling good and healed - that relationships can be mended as we can even find the smallest things to connect with one another, and that’s a great starting point. See more Daniel B @observor Feb 11 An original, feel good, unrealistic movie whose message is music heals everything. See more Jack M Jan 15 This movie was amazing the character development especially between Max and Flora (his mother). It was such a a feel godod movie. Great work done by the director. I would highly recommend this to anyone who has or hasn't seen Sing Street. It was such a good movie. And the fact it's set in Dublin as well is great as I'm from Ireland so it was seeing such an imperfect place of Dublin look oddly beautiful. Great casting and the music was good, however it was missing a big song like "drive it like you stole it" from Sing Street how ever the ending song was very good Max's rap was absolutely brilliant. Loved the movie well deserving of my 5 stars. See more Read all reviews
