Joe S Snotty reviews by artsy-fartsy critics who just didn't get it doomed this 1975 movie, which is a Mike Nichols homage to 1930s screwball comedies. The photography is quite beautiful, including in the evocation of a long-gone way of cross-country train travel. Jack Nicholson both mugs and underplays in the role, and Warren Beatty is perfect as the dimwitted buddy/straight man. But Stockard Channing runs away with the picture, both as the beautiful ditz heiress and in the pure gutsy physicality of her performance. A very good movie to see for the first time. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/15/23 Full Review James C What a couple of assholes Nicholson and Beatty appear to be in this. Stockard Channing is great. Mike Nichols was right to take eight years off from directing after this. What is the explanation? Cocaine? Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Stephen C The least funny 01 hour: and 28 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/28/22 Full Review Audience Member I love this movie. It is fall-down funny. The three leads are terrific. Stockard Channing is flawless. It bubbles along beautifully. I don't understand why it is poorly reviewed. One of the funniest films of the 70s. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member Critics get paid for their good reviews so do not believe them. Again just watch it. Its hilarious. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Everyone hated this film. They were all wrong. it is a bizarre black comedy masterpiece like no other made. Kevin Maher Times (UK) The movie remains essential viewing for Tinseltown completists, and there are some smart set pieces from the director Mike Nichols, including a slapstick traffic jam on a midnight bridge. Rated: 3/5 Apr 22, 2024 Full Review Vincent Canby New York Times [Stockard Channing] is a fine-grained, robust comic talent who keeps the film in proper balance by being just as intensely lunatic as her two co-stars. [Full review in Spanish] May 9, 2005 Full Review Roger Moore Movie Nation Brisk and occasionally loud, the script never quite hits the funnybone and the players can’t compensate for that.
