After completing his prison sentence for killing a rival gang leader in self-defense, Benny Horowitz (John Gilbert) decides to go straight, and takes a mechanic's job. Surprised when his former girlfriend, Frieda (Joan Crawford), tracks him down hoping to get back together, Benny rejects her, wanting to avoid his old connections. But when the leader of Benny's former gang is killed at a party that Benny is attending, his new life is threatened as he falls under suspicion of the crime.
