Brian D. Johnson Maclean's Magazine Without perspective, any portrait of an artist risks slipping into a self-referential vortex. That's what happens with Francophrenia... Audience Member Terrible. Seen at Hot Docs 2012 Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Saw this movie at Tribeca. Very fun and unique. Heard the Q&A from Ian Olds. He told Franco the footage that had been shot really had nothing to provide from a documentary standpoint, so they scripted some "inner thoughts" and turned it into a work of art. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Francophrenia is a documentary with minimal dialogue and plot and most of what is said is supposed to be Francoâ(TM)s inner monologue. It also happens to be really dull. I donâ(TM)t care about celebritiesâ(TM) lives when theyâ(TM)re not playing the characters Iâ(TM)ve bonded with. I hate that when I turn on the news I get updates on who has just had a baby or who has naked pictures circulating â" I donâ(TM)t want to know any more than if it were the person who owns the corner store or someone who works at my dadâ(TM)s firm. So the idea of following around James Franco on set did nothing for me and felt like an extended DVD extra that I probably would have ignored anyway (even if I were a General Hospital fan).
