Award-winning director Agnieszka Holland is embarking on her most ambitious project to date, a biopic of the iconic 20th-century Czech writer Franz Kafka. Conceived as a kaleidoscopic mosaic, the film will follow the imprint Kafka left on the world from his birth in 19th-century Prague to his death in post-WW1 Vienna. FRANZ will give the audience a brand new perspective on the life of the man behind the literary giant.

Robert Daniels RogerEbert.com What we’re left with is an ambitious picture that lacks a unique aim. Oct 22, 2025 Full Review Siddhant Adlakha Observer Ambitious to a fault, Kafka biopic Franz is as much about the landmark Czech surrealist as it is about its own making, as a commercialized re-telling of a life cut tragically short. Rated: 3/4 Sep 23, 2025 Full Review Guy Lodge Variety For all this fevered darting and pointing, “Franz” doesn’t have much of a point of view, nor much of an angle on Kafka beyond a general pronouncement of his enduring significance. Sep 23, 2025 Full Review Jeff York The Establishing Shot It's grounded in its historical events yet countered by imagery and flights of fancy capturing the essence of Kafka’s playfulness. It might just be the most idealistically-matched biography subject and film style since "All That Jazz" or "Loving Vincent." Rated: 3.5/4 Oct 22, 2025 Full Review Nikki Baughan Screen International [Franz] at first appears rather overworked, but slowly coalesces into an intriguing -- if not entirely successful -- study of art and legacy. Sep 25, 2025 Full Review Damon Wise Deadline Hollywood Daily Franz marvels at the depth and strangeness of his intellect, which confounds his overbearing father who takes a dim view of his son’s “stupid writing.” Sep 25, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews
