It's Friday and Craig Jones (Ice Cube) has just gotten fired for stealing cardboard boxes. To make matters worse, rent is due, he hates his overbearing girlfriend, Joi (Paula Jai Parker), and his best friend, Smokey (Chris Tucker), owes the local drug dealer money -- and that's all before lunch. As the hours drag on, Jones and Smokey experience the gamut of urban life, complete with crackheads, shoot-outs and overly sexual pastors, concentrated into one single, unbelievable Friday.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

What Friday might lack in taut construction or directorial flair, it more than makes up with its vibrant (albeit consistently crass) humor and the charming, energetic performances of its leads.

While the character-driven script has a weakness for toilet humor (Mel Brooks would be proud), its inhabitants are given some oddball quirks and tics that keep things percolating when the plot development runs a little thin. Go to Full Review

Brandon J @BrandonKeith 3h the best movie ever made. ya I said it. what these legends did with this small of a budget will NEVER be replicated. the dialogue, pacing, authenticity, & comedic timing is PERFECT. the entirety of this movie takes place in one day, on one block, mainly in front of ONE house & never was not captivating! they really let all of the comedians have creative freedom here, and has the best cast in any comedy movie EVER. some of the best comedians & comedian-actors of ALL-TIME are in this film, and overall is just a star studded cast full of culture ICONS. don’t let anyone tell you this movie isn’t a masterpiece. Friday is an essential American experience. this movie has every right to be as iconic/relevant as it is. comedy isn’t even close to my favorite movie genre, but this is THE exception. Every joke/moment NEVER gets old. I also don’t rewatch movies really ever, but i make sure to watch this film once a year. RIP to all of the legends in this film that have passed away. The GOAT. See more Nov 25 A hilarious, vibrant classic that deserves its place among the greats - which is apparent from all its loose, abundant spinoffs and remakes. See more David S. Nov 21 When I first watched this movie, I wasn't expecting much, it just looked like a dumb and pointless, retro film!!! Then... I watched it and boy, did it surprise me. A good story, well acted, and a director who was competent and understood his plot, the movie isn't bad. It does suffer from some era specific humor and a lack of character development, but you could do worse as a film watcher and I ended up enjoying it!!! This film really idealizes and makes you feel encouraged to live the lazy and nonchalant lifestyle on display here. While in the film it is Friday, Friday for these fellas could be just another day, any day of the week. This film has classic and iconic lines that can stick with you forever.
