Critics Consensus

Though it sacrifices some depth in its characterizations, From Beyond stands as a stunningly grotesque Lovecraft adaptation with a dazzling blend of chilling effects and brainy, cosmic horror.

Brian Tallerico HollywoodChicago.com Jeffrey Combs is SO good here, completely committing to every element of a very demanding role. Andy B A solid but unspectacular 80's exploitation horror which will always be compared unfavourably to the classic Re-Animator. Most of the effects hold up well though, and the new transfer looks great. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/24/25 Full Review Nick O A second Lovecraft outing from most of the Re-animator gang, this slime monster sex trip is just as good…or maybe even better! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/29/25 Full Review Justin T This is absolutely crazy. It is carried by Crawford and Pretorius played by Jeffrey Combs and Ted Sorel. The other cast are good enough albeit slightly one dimensional to progress the story but the main two really are the most memorable and entertaining. This is a body shock comedy and takes the original HP Lovecraft story and adds in a very pseudo sexual continuation which is really unique. It starts with the short story and goes someplace very different. I loved the flashing coloured lights and the concept of the sixth dimension being all around us but we can't see it until we stimulate our pineal gland with the resonator. So this film is great but it does have slightly uneven pacing between the bat-poop crazy moments which come from the ever-degenerating Pretorius. The practical effects and creatures they create are genuinely memorable and totally entertaining. It is the perfect length overall. I prefer Brain Damage (1988) but this is still highly recommended. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/09/25 Full Review Sebastian L Maybe my expectations were too high but From Beyond never comes alive like Gordon's brilliant Re-Animator does. The premise is superb but production choices get in the way of immersion. The slow tempo is making sure there's never any momentum, the cinematography seems ill-planned and Combs' overacting doesn't fit his character at all. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Jay H This movie is outrageous. It's slimy, it's gory, and it's kinky. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/27/24 Full Review Mark B Entertaining effects, acting so 80's over the to. Story is just enough to get you excited and into the movie. Movie had perfect run time in and out 90 months nutes Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review Read all reviews
