Summer G (Richard T. Jones), an aspiring rapper, finds himself enamored with a young woman named Sky Hightower (Chenoa Maxwell), an ambitious social climber who is wary of Summer's low-class status. Although she rejects him for Chip (Blair Underwood), who works in the lucrative world of finance, that only pushes Summer to work even harder to make himself a wealthy and important man -- someone Sky will love. However, he encounters problems from both the old money guard and from Sky herself.

Race and class struggles come to the Hamptons in this reworking of The Great Gatsby with a hip-hop flavor. Unfortunately, too many subplots and a lack of believable characters spoil an otherwise novel concept.

So this is the literary classic that I never got to finish in high school come to the big screen. Kudos for the hip-hop twist, but this film's inspirations inclusion in my high school curriculum speaks volumes about the U.S. education system. "G" is a cautionary tale of a rumor mill spun out of control, yet handles the whole thing like Jerry Springer with guns being allowed on the set. I credit the cast for taking this seriously, but this film is shot in such an amateurish light that it just cant save it's tabloid cover plot to make it worth the cover of an actual tabloid.

Given that this was supposed to be based on a hip hop lifestyle in the Hamptons, it was a little lacking in bling. The leads have all done better work on other projects. A poor reworking of the Great Gatsby.

Synopsis
