Janet Maslin New York Times Whenever the film wanders away from Gabriela, it seems to dawdle aimlessly before finding her again. Mar 13, 2015 Full Review Roger Ebert RogerEbert.com There is no real chemistry between the bar owner and his wonderful lover, [so] even the most dedicated filmgoer is eventually reduced to waiting for what we used to call the good parts. Rated: 2/4 Mar 13, 2015 Full Review Bob Baker Time Out Number one item on the agenda, however, is the camera's on-going perusal of the Braga bod. Mastroianni as Gabriela's main man lends an air of consequence to the proceedings. Mar 13, 2015 Full Review Molly Haskell Vogue The exploration of the senses that was portrayed joyously in [Jorge] Amado's novel comes to seem exploitative in Bruno Barreto's movie. Feb 26, 2020 Full Review Diego Galán El Pais (Spain) A fun comedy that outlines a profile of Brazilian society in 1925. [Full Review in Spanish] Feb 18, 2020 Full Review David Parkinson Radio Times The film's focus should have been on the way the unswervingly chauvinistic Mastroianni is forced to compromise his principles to save his marriage. But such is Barreto's fixation with Braga's body that the tone is almost risibly soft-core. Rated: 2/5 Mar 13, 2015 Full Review Read all reviews

Andre L Icônico! Um marco na história do cinema brasileiro. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/07/22 Full Review Audience Member Based on Jorge Amado's novel, Gabriela it's a erotic drama by Bruno Barreto with terrific actings by Marcello Mastroianni and Sonia Braga. A chronicle about costum, society, sex and love. Gabriela have the bold of present nudity and sex scenes, showing the beauty in human body and love between the characters of Gabriela and Nacib. Fresh. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Oh my God! This crap is considered a true Brazilian classic?!?! This movie was poorly developed, the acting is considered almost amateur and the plot wasn't that good either. How did Sonia Braga became famous and moved to the USA? She almost doesn't speak. The movie just shows her naked almost all the time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Wonderful Brazilian soap. Steamy. The book, as usual, is much better. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member There's a plot going on, but I didn't find it...
