Hubris, anger, prejudice... doo-wop, reggae, rock... expectations, heartbreak, transformation... Garland Jeffreys: The King of In Between examines the fifty-year career of this genre-bending, biracial singer-songwriter. An enigmatic performer since his start in the Greenwich Village clubs, Jeffreys never quite reached the success predicted for him. The film asks why, and explores how his commitment to writing about race in America is more relevant now than ever.

David R I have been a fan since the 1970s and was fortunate to have attended probably 70 or so live shows..As I have told some people that if I was just a music fan I would have thought this documentary was great as it hits emotions from joy to sadness and some frustration..To me, I was so engrossed in watching this and for those who don't know Garlands music and history it would be enjoyable. Great clips and kudos to Claire and crew for putting this documentary together Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/10/25 Full Review Norman P This movie is an absolute must-see! It's the story of an extraordinary performer-Garland Jeffreys! Everything about the film was perfect- I plan to see it a second (and maybe third time!) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/10/25 Full Review mary jo P A truly thoughtful documentary about an underrated musician. He is a legend to those who knew his music. A well made love letter from a wife who was his partner in everything. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/10/25 Full Review James L Although Garland’s “moment” in popular culture dates back to the early sixties when he attended Syracuse with Lou Reed, this documentary is essential viewing for anyone who grew up in and around music in NYC in the 70s and 80s. Garland was still trying to build a career off “Wild In The Streets” with semi-hit albums on Arista and other labels. Loved every second of it, and I second the reviews that wished it was longer. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/10/25 Full Review douglas g A wonderful movie for fans of Garland and newbies. Great interviews and songs, I just wish it was longer. Hats off Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/10/25 Full Review Robert T One of the most underrated artist most people have never heard about but once you listen to his music your an instant fan!
