His music has been such an inspiration to me for decades. He managed to weave beautiful songs with lyrics that tell a harsh truth about our society. Sometimes his music was not accepted because of the message. This movie gives me a better understanding about his creative process, his motivation to write certain songs and the hurdles he faced getting his music to the public despite the rejection of the record moguls. His message of “keep on trying” is not only evident in his releasing so many wonderful albums but also in his wife/producer Claire Jeffreys determination to get his story to the screen. If you don’t know Garland Jeffreys, you will wish you had after watching this documentary. But don’t worry, you can catch up by starting to listen right now. It breaks my heart to know that Garland is battling Alzheimers, but it makes it a little easier to face this sad news knowing that his catalog of music will be his legacy. Please spend an hour of your time watching this film. I wouldn’t steer you wrong. Even Bruce Springsteen has endorsed this film. If you know you know - his talent, lyrics-poetry, music and energy are incredible. This documentary truly captures his essence and illustrates the highs and lows of Garlands career and the weirdness of the music industry through the decades. It’s a story of resilience and the power of love. I highly recommend this movie to everyone- whether you are new to his music or a long time fan.
