Jason Zinoman New York Times It has far too many fresh takes and idiosyncratic elements to be called hack. But it is a reminder that whatever you think about it, there is no denying that sometimes, the familiar works. Oct 23, 2019 Full Review Ashlie D. Stevens Salon.com The Great Depresh crackles with certain energy -- a series of slow builds to these lightning strike moments. This skillful pacing and delivery, in combination with [Gary] Gulman's fresh, crushing, and contemporary material makes this special a must-watch. Oct 10, 2019 Full Review Matthew Gilbert Boston Globe An excellent stand-up set. Oct 7, 2019 Full Review Matt Wilstein The Daily Beast For such a dark subject, it has no business being as hilarious as it is. Gulman is just that talented. Marc Z I just adore this special. Gary Gilman is so bright and articulate. He is a great storyteller. This is a very personal and self reflective look at his battle with crippling depression, and more. Gulman is a master of language. I love listening to him form sentences in the stories he tells about his childhood as a poor, lonely boy in Massachussetts. The comedy footage is interspersed with personal reflections and interviews with friends and family. One of the most shocking elements is the footage he opens with, of his meltdown, a few years prior to open the special. Gulman is a good comedian, and I found his approach really brave and honest. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/24/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm admittedly a Gulman fanboy, but I loved this special. I was shocked to hear the content, as he has hidden it so well behind his humor in the past. Truly remarkable how he tackles a real subject while keeping us laughing all the way.
