      Critics Consensus

Get Smart rides Steve Carell's considerable charm for a few laughs, but ultimately proves to be a rather ordinary action comedy.

Dylan N Not as funny as you would expect. This is a pretty typical early 2000s action-comedy movie. But a little disappointing considering how stacked this cast is. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/02/24 Full Review Eye C This was a good laugh. I really like the serious faces of all making stupid things. Great cast by the way. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/22/24 Full Review WA S I'd forgotten how hilarious this movie is. It has been a long time since I last saw it and went searching for Get Smart 2, but sadly, the producer has stated that it will not happen. Steve Carell made the perfect Max. And I just realized "Kneel before Zod!" played Seigfried. I always thought it was Malcolm McDowell. Either way, it is great entertainment. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/19/24 Full Review Lanfranco C Bizarre and funny movie. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/24 Full Review Test T I watched this on DVD and enjoyed it. I found it amusing rather than silly, which was about right for my taste in comedy. Alongside Steve Carrel, I thought Anne Hathaway was very good, and I thought Terrence Stamp made a good villain. I liked the style of presentation, and the gadgetry and action which complemented the story nicely. I found Steve's character a little too formal, mainly because he was stepping up from being an analyst where attention to detail had been necessary. I think a better choice of former career could have improved the film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/18/24 Full Review KB B This was not too good. Now I know why I never bothered with this one. I could only watch about 40 minutes. Horrible dialogue with many poor jokes. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/14/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Nell Minow Movie Mom Rated: B+ Feb 18, 2012 Full Review Kenneth Turan Los Angeles Times As a reworking of one of the great 1960s TV comedies, you'd think being funny would be its main goal. But you would be wrong. Very, very wrong. Rated: 1.5/5 Oct 18, 2008 Full Review Larushka Ivan-Zadeh Metro Newspaper (UK) An uninspired comedy that runs the full gamut from characters being punched in the groin/face to being shot in the face/groin, until everything culminates in an expensively pointless action finale. Rated: 2/5 Aug 22, 2008 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz Like a younger, more rigorous version of Leslie Nielsen in his Naked Gun prime, Carell demonstrated here why he had, at the time, a reputation as the funniest man in America. Feb 7, 2022 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Admirably mimics the blend of genres and innovations that made the original series so memorable. Rated: 8/10 Nov 28, 2020 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com While Carell hasn't quite attained an acting range that allows for much depth in his characters, the presence of Hathaway provides a perfect contrast to Maxwell Smart.
