Audience Member and amazing performance by its actors is that how Riri Riza described Gie and the potrayal of Gie by Nicholas Saputra is superbly brilliant and outrageously believable. And also that Gie's aspirations for Indonesia to be upstanding the corruption and the false power of authority by the goverment is very profound. "Lebih baik diasingkan daripada menyerah kemunafikan." Gie is one among of the most influential and the best Indonesian films that whole-heartedly filmed, has amazingly great performance and thoughtfully profound thoughts. Soe Hok Gie adalah gambaran mahasiswa yg cerdas, dari pemikirannya, dari tulisannya, dari ide2nya. Inspiratif, tp agak keras, susah diatur, sedikit lunak mungkin lebih baik, mungkin. Karena orang jadinya lbih menilai apa yg disampaikan oleh Gie sbgai suatu kritik yg merusak, bukan ide yg cemerlang. Seorang idealis sejati. Namun, Gie harus meninggal di usia muda, meninggal saat melakukan kegiatan yang amat disukainya, mendaki gunung (Gunung Semeru). Apkah kecelakaan yg dialami Gie hingga membuatnya meninggal murni karena kecelakaan? Kecelakaan yg wajar dialami oleh pendaki gunung? Bukan konspirasi? Entahlah.... Not that it's bad, but it was too slow yet not showing much of the personality of the main character. Race problem was somehow "deleted" whereas in real life it still is a great problem. Also, it shows too much handsome side of Nicholas Saputra. I read Gie's diary and it was actually deeper than this movie, but I am sure it can be made in lighter ways yet showing the depth of Gie's thought, whether it is right or wrong. I think the director could have explored more...
